Marathon for the orphans in Gaza

Welfare Association’s Mustaqbali program along with Save the Children of Palestine organized a marathon entitled “Mustaqbali” as part of the activities supporting education for orphans in the Gaza Strip.  Mustaqbali program was launched by Welfare Association, with a generous support from Abraaj Group in 2009 to respond to the needs of Palestinian children in Gaza orphaned or lost their primary income earning parent as a direct consequence of war, it aims to enhance the lives of children and empower them through educational support, health and professional development.

Seventy students between the ages of 12 and 18 participated in the 3 Km marathon. The winners were honored in the presence of Ms. Maha Muhessein Mustaqbali’s program manager in Gaza, Mr. Jamal Aqeeli General Manager of Children’s Fund at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and Ms. Afaf Alkhaldi the project manager at Save the Children of Palestine. The Marathon was concluded by a “Dabkeh” show.

 Ms. Muheisen elaborated on the Marathon as part of extracurricular activities, which aims to develop children’s talents and interests and improve their psychological situation through involvement in activities that enhance their physical and mental health.

From her side Ms. Afaf al-Khalidi, the program’s manager at Save the Children of Palestine said that all safety and security procedures were considered with the General Directorate of Traffic, in addition to coordination with the Ministry of Health to conduct the necessary medical tests to the participants.

It is worth mentioning that Mustaqbali program offers orphaned children the opportunity to live a fulfilling life and to contribute to the long term development of Gaza. Currently, 1741 Children and 482 foster families are benefitting from the program.
